APTIUM CIO HIGHLIGHTS THE CHANGING ROLE OF IT IN ARTICLE FOR ADVANCE MAGAZINE A recent issue of Advance for Health Information Executives features an article by Wes Scruggs, Aptium Oncology’s Chief Information Officer, on the evolution of IT functionality requirements in the ambulatory cancer center. Titled ’The Evolving Cancer Center,’ the article details Aptium Oncology’s information technology experience in the outpatient hospital-based setting through progressive phases of IT development over 10 years. Scruggs writes about the profound transformation of outpatient oncology IT from relatively straightforward back-office and administrative support functions to one that includes a vast array of clinical, decision-support and reporting capabilities. Citing EMR as an example, he notes that the industry as a whole is embracing, budgeting for and implementing systems that will eventually eliminate all, most or some paper from the clinical process. Scruggs highlights communication as key in securing buy-in and implementing emerging IT initiatives. He writes that the successful CIO must maintain an open dialogue with stakeholders, and must have enough political capital to deliver process change through clinical leadership, sales skills, the bully pulpit, and yes, even donuts for the midnight nurses. |
